Hey.

I know this is a bit of a cross forum thing going on between religion and music, but hey this looks like a dandy place to put this topic.

Coming soon to youth, THE BAND!!!

featuring (among others)...

On drums... Emily Philips
On bass... Matthew Neilsen
On lead guitar... Penny Redshaw
On keyboard... Elliot Bill (and Shane if he can be bothered :p )
And on vocals... Eliza Bellhouse, Josh Nicholls and co...

We should be up and running by next term if all goes to plan, GET PRACTISING!!!

Erm...Yeah next term seems a bit too early... It takes a lot more time than that to learn an instrument well enough to play worship songs well and keep it all together.

Yeah, I think we should take a bit of time to get some instruments learned.

Yeah thats just me be super mega optimistic and setting extreme deadlines Very Happy.

It shouldn't take us too much longer to learn though, you'll be surprised how quickly you can pick it up once you get past the initial stages, my brother learnt guitar like an expert in about a month.

I'm thinking of maybe learning guitar too...

sorry to jump on the hasty generalisation, but it seems so inviting and obvious...

when i was staying at your place penny, your dad practiced twice, a good solid amount of time each session. you didn't. neither did anna, come to think of it...

but yeah, it's basically a matter of deciding that you want to win. much like the discussion i had with shane about the mystery of the unflushed poo with no paper... i won't bother explaining, it works inside my own head, and that's the important thing.

i can't guarantee that i'll be able to fix this piano to an 'acceptable' standard for my practicing... and i'm pretty much flatly refusing to play on that thing they call a keyboard at church... but if i'm as good at fixing pianos as i am at climbing trees, the silkstone one should be fine. as for church, i'll buy one when i'm confident on my old upright.

my old fiddle teacher, kerry smith, arguably the best in queensland, ranted at me regularly. the premise of EVERY SINGLE ONE was, 'elliott, if you don't practice, you won't improve. if you don't improve from week to week, i can't teach you.'

we don't have queensland's best fiddle teacher, but we have Someone Else.

Lol? An expert after a month of practice..Seems a bit of an exaggeration there.. no one, not even freakin Tommy Emanuel (one of the best guitarists of all time) would of been an expert in a month...

Whoever you are, even if you are one of those people who just pick up music really quickly, you cannot become an expert in a months time. I've been learning music since I was little enough to say the word, I pick up music quickly but even after all these years, I'm no expert... Lol. It just seemed a bit weird.. Oh well..

But yeah, I say practice solid for at least a year. You can't just expect it to be easy cause it isn't lol you'd be surprised it takes a lot more than what you think to have a band and to play WELL enough to have good worship. Basic, but perfect timed strumming on an acoustic guitar is fine for rhythm. Lead is usually easy as well, but then you need to learn how to read songs, blah blah, and how to play with in a group.. practicing and playing by yourself is different. So I also suggest practicing with each other as well. If you just practice for a few terms or whatever and then try and all play together for the first time, it's going to suck. Honestly. So as well as practicing alone start making youth band practices. Do it!

Ryan, you are nothing except correct. Very good. The best bands (in any genre of music) keep praciticing and redifining their skills literally every day to make themselves inginuitive in music. If you even get good at playing instruments its called mastering what you do know and THEN move on. Nobody (unless a freak) can pick up a guitar and start playing DragonForce solos or pick up a drum set and beat at nearlly 270bpm in single stroke and 1407bpm (yes I am a Tim Waterson fanboy). It is practice and redifining. It usually takes a while to get good

Basically what I am saying is... A term will not be enough.

"when our human will is aligned with god's will, nothing is impossible".

that was vicki last night, on youth band.

penny, i want music to learn... i mean, i can practice impro on two hands until i'm good, but unless the world still has worship songs in blue it won't work...

plus... half of the people in the band are already decent at what they do. drums, emily philips. vocals, eliza. keyboard, me. (except i need music!)

i need to practice skills, a little bit, but considering most keyboard work is just playing slow chords i should be right.

i could play bass in a month with no practice at all, except what i did at school... i could already read music, that was the hardest part of bass for me, but that was school. maybe here the line will be trickier.

penny will do well if she knuckles down...

i'm not gonna be dissapointed if we don't get this going by the end of the year...

I'm knuckling down.. (?)

Found a guitar lesson site on the net, i'm starting from the beginning so i can be sure I'm ok. I've learned quite a bit already.

If you want music, Nielsen's got some piano parts for songs, I think..

I've got everything (bass, drums, lead and rhythm guitar, keyboard, official OHT) for the entire United We Stand album, and either piano or score for 31 shakers songs, and I can get a lot of the Hillsong stuff (I sent penny a bit of the Hillsong stuff, don't know if she still has it though).

I'm also knuckling down, only problem I've got is transferring the theory that I hear about into something that I can play... And the small factor in being able to read sheet music (trying to work on it).

well... keys are pretty important in alot of worship tunes, so the more the merrier as far as those are concerned.

not ashamed, only because it's hard and i will have accomplished something when i can play it well.

i hope someone's getting all this to poor miss emily... i don't wanna be stuck with a stinky tambourine pretending to be a drumkit.

We're not saying we have to be experts by next term, like you said worship music isn't too difficult, it's usually created in mind of the youth that will have to learn and play it, it's not going to have any crazy dragonforce guitar solos. Most of it's just chords.

And like I said, practice individually for a bit, then we meet on the holidays and combine. We can't rehearse together until we have something to rehearse that each of us have a fair idea of.

In other words, you pretty much just went over everything I've already said Very Happy.

And kudos to Elliot...

"when our human will is aligned with god's will, nothing is impossible".

Faith, at first I said that this band will be running by next term, not everyone believed that was even nearly possible. If we had faith, we would at least have gotten a lot closer than we are at the moment.

At drama we get asked a lot of time to do things that are really impossible, we know that they are impossible, but just trying to do them can teach us something new or give us some new skills.

Kudos for you Josh for two reasons. 1: You are right and 2 (most important): you mentioned DragonForce...

Jump Around is easy vocally, Take It All is easy in a way and The Stand is an awesome song to learn. Starting next term should be heaps of time if all members of the band are committed to it. You could come and check out my youth band at practice, see how things run. Smile You might get a few ideas! Just let me know and I'll tell you where and when.
