what makes a good song good?

i don't think it's magic this time... because i remember on wolfmother's album, the song 'witchcraft' had magic, but it wasn't a good song... and it just doesn't make sense to use magic to make a song bad.

i think, alot of it comes down to a sort of paradoxical complex simplicity... think ravel's bolero, the same 16 bar melody repeated throughout, but each time it grows in texture and complexity... it's that sort of 'complex simplicity' i'm talking about. take a simple lyrical line, repeat, but add to it and subtract from it each time until you have something good.

now i'm in a ravel's bolero mood...

edit: i don't care about lyrics, lyrics don't make a song.

It all depends on the style of music. When it comes to death metal you need it to be complicated, layered, brutal, fast and at the end of the song or album you must be left with a sense of "holy crap, what just happened". Leaving you gasping for air.

When it comes to the more epic sort of stuff. It must be really epic, it must chastise your emotions. It must be beautiful, dark and very satisfying. When it comes to the more "folk" stuff. You must feel like that you wanna go on an adventure.

Epic songs? Prime example is Stairway To Heaven by Led Zep. The whole thing doesn't seem like 8 minutes and nothing is repeated (ie chorus, verses) and it just sounds epic. Same with some GNR stuff.

But as Matt said it depends on the genre, and just because it's not epic doesn't mean it's not quality.

The way that I see it all, music is about storytelling and discovery. Each song is like a play, whether it be a happy or a sad story its still a story. Some of these stories have different settings, some try to get different emotional responses from you. Thats music genres. The instruments in the songs, they're the setting of the play and all of the nonverbal communication like body language. The lyrics are exactly that, the spoken words in this story. Some stories are heavy on the setting and light on the script because they want to convey their message across in a different way. Some want to use didactism and make you think about a certain issue, thats when they're light on the instrument and focus on the lyrics.

For any good show to be memorable it must get a proper emotional response, i love the massive almost epic sad stories. Eskimo Joe's - How does it feel and my current myspace song Heart's a mess by Gotye are two great examples. They use their setting, they're instruments to communicate what they're really thinking and they try to blow you away with a script that doesnt mess around, it cuts to the bone.

Its things like this why people can relay a certain memory to a song, every memory has its own story and like those little fish that stick to big fish thats what a song does to this memory. When people are feeling down they listen to a song, either a sad story to add to their feeling or a happy story to cheer them up. Some people love a play so much that they rely on it and its messages, I see it in a few people. They have a big argument or get insulted and they go listen to this song. Thats a bad thing. Listening to music when your sleeping, thats also a bad thing. That stuff messes with your head.

But honestly I think that music is just a story, some are better than others and some want different emotional reactions. Snow patrol - When i listen to snow patrol it makes me think of relationships I've had and the mistakes I'e made... Then i take a moment to realise that i never actually had these relationships, its just that damn good of a story that i got sucked in.

But if we're going to break it down to its most basic form, i personally like music that sounds different to everything else. I don't like to hear two songs that sound the same, i don't want to hear two stories that sound the same. I want to get out there, listen to different stories, different settings and different genres. I could easily write an essay on what i think about music. What makes a good song good is when it either gets an emotional reaction, makes me think or simply entertains me. Music is a theatre.
