firstly i find they make interesting conversation... and i've been told that the meaning of a dream is often exactly what common sense tells you it is.

[edit: this isn't so much religion as philosophy, but this particular example touches on a religious issue... there's alot of AA in this thread-idea-thingy too, but i think it's mostly a philosophical thingy more than anything else.]

i had a dream not long ago, we were returning from an inland youth-type event, and due to the number of people attending there had to be extra trains, and our group was split up between two trains leaving from different (parallel) platforms. the trains left at about the same time, separated, but later in the voyage they began travelling parallel again, right next to each other. the trains began to seperate again, and i saw penny through a window, we were a long way from home so i got her attention and mouthed the words, 'i love you', she replied with a smile, and passed out of view.

the train i was on stopped in a small rural station to let the passengers stretch their legs, and generally have a break. i ducked off, and knowing i had a fair bit of time, put myself on a walking track. i followed the track, it led to a shallow quarry, i ran around in it, jumping off mounds, cliffs, climbing this, having a great time. i saw a patch of puddles, and dirt, glistening and wet, i jumped in it and found out that it was mud, quite thin mud, quicksand mud. i struggled, struggled, tried to find something to grab onto, and stopped. i gave up, and just 'floated' on it, face up, in hot sun. i knew i was going to die of exposure, and the memory of penny's smile on the train kept on visiting me. the smile was forcing away any ideas of prayer, prayer which coud have saved me.

i thought some time after that how shameful it was of dream-elliott to not call on God, but i later worked out that the dream was about my own head. it was about fear of separation from the ones i loved, and that fear (in my dream) ultimately meant the end of me... so yeah, as a result of that dream, and pretty much the dream alone, i've cut back on being as close to people as i was, because it only gets in the way of prayer.

it says in 1st John, that perfect love casteth out all fear... the love i had/have for penny, ellie, and others in the past; though pretty pure, wasn't perfect, and that let fear creep into it...

yeah, let's hear about dreams...

p.s, ++ irony points for anyone who watched mash today, and takes into account that i was typing this before it started...

Weirdest dream I've ever had.. probably when the Gorilla pulled out my belly button with pliars.

Anyway..

About a month ago, I had a really scary dream. I was locked in a prison (back in medieval times, by the way) with Nielsen. Then the crazy lady who ran the prison came down and grabbed her sword. Unfortunately, Nielsen got away, and because of that, the lady had to cut my arm off. She said 'hold still, this is for your own good'. She hacked at my arm, but I took the sword and started hacking at her head, I was terrified. But then, after my hacking didn't cut her head off, she took the sword back and chopped out my tongue..

All while this was happening some crazy guy with a hood on was watching, holding an axe.

Hahaha, too much tv for Penny.

I wrote a little thing on dreams a while back. It may be a little bit different to what you intended this thread to be about, Elliot. But, I just thought I'd share it.

Eliza wrote:
The human mind, quite a complex, yet easy thing to understand if you observe behaviours and such long enough.

The question I ask - why do we dream? And why do dreams have such weird meaning and motives? Is it really just our imagination running wild with the subconscious? Or is there really more meaning to it than we think?

I'm not speaking of the dreams we have which involves us reminiscing about the day's events. I'm speaking of the ones where we take a brief look into the future.
Are they somehow real? Or are they just what we wish to happen, or in negative cases, what we don't want to happen.

I have had several dreams where in fact, it has come true in the not too distant future. It's quite a sublime gift, to be able to see the future, whether it be good, or bad. Most would say it's a preposterous idea to think we, as simple humans can see the future. But if you think about it hard enough, it's no where near crazy. If the brain has the power to think up calculations and invent things of great significance to further discovery of everything that surrounds us, then surely we can see into the future.

I'm not sure what relevance that has to anything. But what do you think about my little theory?

A lot of my dreams become reality.

i prefer a more skeptical approach to dreams that become reality... first, there is the deja-vu element, where the mind tricks itself into thinking that a current situation happened in the past, and then comes to the conclusion (by process of elimination) that it may have been dreamt. then you have the sheer volume of material we dream about, some of it's bound to stick in our subconscious, and from that, some of can find itself in a situation similar to that in the dream, and then the imagination fills in the rest.

some dreams no doubt can be prophetic, my mother dreamed an angel appeared before her, the form of an old man, and told her to move from caboolture to ipswich so she'd be able to care for me... at more-or-less the exact time she had the dream, my grandfather (my dad's dad) died...

then you have biblical accounts where future events were talked about in detail, the dreams of pharoah in genesis (the seven thin cows devouring the seven fat cows), and the dreams of joseph and mary, the earthly parents of christ, warning them to flee to egypt... legitimate prophetic dreams are out there, alright, but i think that's more a spiritual thing than a psychological thing.

By the way, I thought I'd give an example of my dreams becoming reality.

I dreamt that my ex-boyfriend Matt would cheat on me and dump me. Couple of days later, what happens? He cheats on me and dumps me.

Surprised

yeah... i get that too. but there's no way of telling which dreams become reality, so i give it thought, and if nothing important comes up i disregard it...

it's the ones about grandfathers visiting mothers from kilometers away as their last earthly act that get my attention...
